Students mobilize for the love of Mexico
It was on September 14 that For the Love of Mexico,Special Edition 2020 opened its call, at which time young people with new ideas and enthusiasm saw an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, since this edition was directed especially for university students.
The objective was clear: to generate initiatives that address issues related to the conservation and protection of flora, fauna, ecosystems and the environment.
During the first stage of the contest, more than 120 projects were registered and almost 150 people participated, who headed their project individually or in a team of up to four members.
Let the contest start!
The response to the call was surprising, but the challenge was just beginning. Each project had to go through different levels of review, depth and focus. Once this was carried out, specific information was requested from the 78 chosen projects. This as part of the requirements found in the terms and conditions of the contest, among the most important were:
The executive summary of the project.
The development of the project.
The delivery of two initial guarantee letters.
This last requirement was essential to prove that the project had the necessary permits and administrative procedures to be executed if it were a winner.
Information was received from only 41 extremely interesting projects that addressed topics such as: environmental education, sustainable rain harvesting, protection of mangroves in the south of the country and the conservation of the coastal dunes of Yucatán, just to mention a few.
After the review, the 6 best were chosen so that the jury appointed by Volkswagen could determine 2 finalists, who would compete through public voting, these were:
“Biological and social strategies for the rescue and conservation of birds of prey” by students from BUAP, Puebla.
“Conservation of the Altiplano axolotl in La Malinche National Park” by students from Universidad Iberoamericana campus Puebla, Universidad de las Américas campus Puebla and ITESO-Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara.
To select the lucky winner, voting was opened on the Por Amor a México website . The more votes, the more chances of winning!
However, something unexpected happened: during this stage a bot attack was detected, so it was necessary to cancel the planned process and open new selection alternatives in the hands of Volkswagen México and Expok, without losing sight of the transparency and clarity of the contest, as well as the requirements set forth in the terms and conditions.
Finally, the organizing committee made up of members of Volkswagen Mexico and Expok chose a winner.
And the winning project is…
“Biological and social strategies for the rescue and conservation of birds of prey” made up of Daniela Cruz Hernández and Rosa Isabel Cid García, both 22 years old; Paulina Plata Camarena, 23, and Patricia Arcos, 24. All students at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP).
Their initiative aims to rescue and increase the number of recovered birds that have been victims of trafficking and illegal trade, as well as rehabilitate them with a balanced diet and ensure their well-being through non-invasive laboratory tests, all to reinsert them into their natural habitat.
The project demonstrated solidity in terms of species conservation and objectives and scope to implement it. So you will receive support of 250 thousand pesos and it will have to be done over a period of a year and a half.
At Volkswagen México and Expok, we reaffirm our commitment to Por Amor a México,Special Edition 2020 through close monitoring that we will give to the victorious project.
