Did you know that each plastic bottle takes about 450 years to decompose and if it is not exposed to the elements, up to a thousand? Furthermore, 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans each year. If these data hold, the seas would contain more plastic than fish in 2050, according to the UN , which is why an urgent reduction in plastics is required.
Recently, heads of state, environment ministers and other representatives from 175 countries agreed to a historic resolution on plastic pollution . The international and legally binding agreement by the end of 2024 addresses the entire life cycle of plastic, its production, design and disposal.
The UNEA-5 agreement
In this way, international collaboration will seek to improve and facilitate access to technology that allows knowledge and best practices from different parts of the world in order to achieve plastic reduction.
[…] This is the most important multilateral agreement on the environment since the Paris Agreement. It is an insurance policy for this generation and future ones, so that they can live with plastic and not be condemned by it.

According to The Conversation portal , this treaty will establish basic objectives and allow States to establish their own plans to prevent, reduce and eliminate plastic pollution.
To this end, the UN will work with any government and company – that wishes – throughout the value chain to abandon single-use plastics, as well as to mobilize private financing and eliminate barriers to investments in research and in a new circular economy.
A plastic problem
The magnitude of plastic pollution is growing excessively since Chinese American Phone Number List it went from two million tons in 1950 to 348 million in 2017, becoming a global industry valued at 522.6 billion dollars.
Their impact on production and pollution are a catastrophe for the planet because they cause the loss of nature and harm human health in aspects of fertility and metabolism, to name a few.
plastic reduction
If the current situation continues, by 2050 the polluting emissions associated with its production, use and disposal would represent 15% of those allowed to meet the climate objective of limiting global warming to 1.5ºC.
Therefore, the agreement against plastic pollution, focused on a circular economy, could significantly reduce the volume of plastics by more than 80%, saving governments $70 billion by 2040 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in 25%.
4 optimistic reasons for plastic reduction
It is clear that the world is at a crossroads, but if we decide to do things differently, we will transform the way we live and our dependence on plastics.
International collaboration is there, now we must adopt the policies that allow us to implement it, each one from their own trenches, which is why we present four encouraging reasons that the UNEA-5 agreement includes.
